During my last visit to the Guild's library, I borrowed a few minor volumes that looked particularly unused, which seems understandable since they contain no reference to the Art. The tomes concern non-magical stone construction techniques, standard engineering principles, and estimates of effort for various tasks. Interesting reading and a pleasant change from the esoterica of arcane writing. I've begun sketching various designs for a tower, as well as thoughts on a Fabricari enclave. It is all so straightforward compared to my schooling so far... weight, angles, toughness of various types of stone, reinforcement techniques, maximum spans per thickness... the "dwarven school" contrasted with the "elven." A whole section on the clever adaptations of the gnomes. I really must find another gnome. Those little folk seem almost indispensable when it comes to making anything. It's almost enough to give up wizardry and become an engineer! Ha! Wouldn't that be the day!

I've begun practicing for the Fiddle of Building that I shall one day enchant. Admittedly, I've got some way to go (as Errol reminds me), but I'm encouraged by what I've read. As the tomes describe it, a Fiddle (or Lyre, rather) will produce "the work of a craftsman toiling for one year, with days of rest according to his station, delivered per the half part of an hour of uninterrupted playing." A good deal of effort that is, especially when one realizes that a master musician might play the instrument for the better part of a day if properly fortified before starting!

So, I have reading to do, fiddling to practice, gnomish architects to track down and last, but not least, I must find a place to build. Deepwater, northwest by our map, catches my eye and from what I've heard, that town lacks the tedious rivalries of Danlo. Besides, it's a port, and therefore much more conducive to trade. It may be much smaller than Danlo, but I believe that is due to its age and general neglect. There's nothing to be done about its age, but as for the neglect, I can soon change that if only I can get the party to head north!
