We continued on in the cave. Lots of ant remains (the mutant ones with extra arms like we fought long ago). We came to a room with a big pillar that emitted light, and had "MALAISE" written on it in Elvish (it turns out to be a "drow stay away" marker). We (well, Malif) tunneled through a cave-in (intentional) with a well-placed "Rock to Mud" spell (cool!!). Further on, we came to the niftiest spiral staircase ever. Clearly, someone used to live here. We go down, and it looks like we've found an entrance to the Underdark, but nothing lives here anymore (that pillar of light thing seems to work).

We explored a bit, and found a secret door (it turns out Vaugner has some skill in this area, which was a surprise to all concerned...). It led to what we assume were the living quarters of the mad mutant-making wizard, but there wasn't much left for us to, um, liberate.

We decided we'd really need some night-vision to really explore down here, and went back to civilization. Got Malif a lab (finally!) and he made us a bunch of Goggles of Night. Very nice!

We noticed that Mortinser wasn't answering our messages ("please advise", etc.) in the book he'd given us. We tracked him down and talked to him. He looked and acted funny; most rude, not at all like the Mortinser we used to know. We theorized that he was wearing a Gem of Power and that it had affected (negatively!) his personality. We can't seem to locate Tara. Not good. Though I kind of like the feeling of being "free" of our masters and pursuing our own destiny. Stinking Belar.
