Greed and stupidity. What a combination.

We decided as a group not to finally head off for our mission, but instead to screw around chasing after smugglers who might or might not have treasure. I'm all in favor of money, but this just seems like a distraction. Anyway, we went to check them out.

But we were the ones who got checked out instead. It was obvious that they had seen us and were shadowing us. If they wanted, they could have easily set a trap it would have been hard to escape from. The obvious thing to do was to leave, and come back later or not at all.

But Vernon would have none of that, and headed straight into the thick of things. He somehow didn't die, and we learned the power of web, Malif's new spell.

That's exactly what I meant by thinking through battles last entry. Web is good not because it does damage, but because it makes the situation tactically better. The fight wasn't very hard despite being badly outnumbered by archers, because we could section off parts of the room. I think we probably could do similar things by dividing the battle just by being in the right place.

But at least we made some money, Vaugner finally got some good use out of his hat of disguise, and nobody got permanently damaged. Though Vernon's going to be in trouble if he blundering about without thought for danger. I hope we don't go with him when he finally does himself in.
