Several encounters, none of which ended up in a fight. This is practically unprecedented.

A being of pure magic, speaking in the language of magic, feeding off of things we can't see in the underdark. Strange. But it helpfully warned us away from dangerous ones like it, and we learned something about magic. Useless, probably, but you never know.

And we met and negotiated with Slaad, which turned out to be highly useful -- they gave us information about the upcoming Drow regions, along with antidote to Drow poison. This is really excellent news.

On a more troubling note, the cauldron seems to have gone crazy. It burned down Rillan's house, and delivered a threat to us.

Here's my theory about what happened with him. We left him to spawn (at his request!), and he fell in with these strange spirits. They told him that humans abandoned the forest and turned against them in the demon wars. The cauldron protested that we were loyal and good, and they'd see that when we returned to find him. And then it took a long long time for us to return, and in the meantime they worked at convincing him of the natural treachery of humans.

And now he's bent on revenge.

I suspect that the thing to do is not to try and fight him, but to find a way to send a message or convince him that he's making a mistake. I wonder if we can reach him via sending?
